Find the Best Hair Stylist for Your Production

March 14, 2019 by Luke Gelineau

Excitement fills the air as people move about on a production set. Often, the site is crawling with cameramen, actors and actresses, designers, writers, makeup artists, and more. This “mass production” feeling is often what makes filmmaking so much fun. It brings a group of people together as they work to bring a vision to life.

The hair stylist plays no small role in the filmmaking process. Yet, they often receive very little recognition for their work. Much like makeup artists, hair stylists help bring an element of beauty to the production that no one else can.

hair stylistWhat role do hair stylists play in film productions?

Hairstyling is an art in and of itself. Depending on the style of the film, a hair stylist might have to produce anything from a “50s bob” to “80s glam.” From a “just rolled out of bed” feeling to a “post-superhero fight look.” Additionally, they have to ensure that the hair stays perfectly in place for the duration of the shot.

Anyone with unruly hair knows the difficulty of making it do exactly as you want, and, more importantly, keeping it that way. Having a hair stylist is valuable for this skill alone!

What should you look for in a hair stylist?

Naturally, the first quality you should look for in a hair stylist is one whose skills match the vision of the film. If you aren’t using any wigs for the film, it probably isn’t the best idea to hire someone who specializes in wigs.

Scheduling practice runs with potential hair stylists is a great way to decide if they have the skills necessary to help bring your film to life. Ask lots of questions, and be clear regarding your expectations of them. Likewise, ask them what their expectations are of you.
