Do I Need Aircraft Liability Insurance?

September 20, 2018 by Luke Gelineau

In an age of information overload and visual noise, connecting with your audience can be a challenge for video marketers. Shooting compelling and authentic video requires creativity and frankly, access to technology. Drones are one example of how videographers are reaching new heights in video production.

aircraft liability insuranceThat’s right, drones are becoming increasingly popular with marketers in all industries.

Why?

  • Because video increases click-through rates by up to 300%.
  • 64% of people surveyed said they were more likely to buy after watching a video.
  • Marketing films increase real estate inquiries by over 400%.

Imagine how drone footage would enhance a real estate listing. If the property sits on acreage, you can show an overview of the entire estate. You can use a drone to film the customer experience INSIDE your business. The options are pretty much endless.

3 Things You Need to Know Before Filming with Drones

Frequently, I get calls from people asking about drones. They particularly want to know what the law says about flying them and whether or not they need drone insurance. Here are three important things you need to know before you use a drone to film video.

#1 – Drones are classified as aircraft by an insurance company.

Any aerial vehicle is classified as an aircraft by an insurance company, regardless of how small it is. This means that if your drone is damaged during filming, it is excluded from your equipment policy.  If you damage property with your drone, you will NOT be covered by General Liability. Many insurance companies include the terms “Drone” and “UAV” in their exclusions list.

#2 – You need to purchase Aircraft Liability Insurance.

For drone coverage, you need what is called Aircraft Liability.  Aircraft Liability Insurance covers any damage or injuries that your drone causes to a third party. For coverage of the actual equipment, you will need an additional policy.

#3 – Many cities or locations require Aircraft Liability before you can shoot.

You may be willing to absorb the loss of a damaged drone and bet on the fact that there won’t be any damages to third parties. However, many locations will not allow you to begin filming without the proper insurance coverage and that includes Aircraft Liability. They might also levy fines if there is an “incident.”

Drone Insurance for Your Film Production

You should always be prepared. Give us a call to talk about drone insurance.  There are lots of insurance options out there to cover damage to your drone and any damage your drone might cause.  Call or email me with any questions, and DON’T FLY UNINSURED!
